Renewable Technology – what’s it all about?

Renewable, low-carbon technologies can help households reduce reliance on fossil
fuels, lower carbon emissions and improve long-term energy resilience. In domestic
homes, the most common options combine clean electricity generation, efficient
heating and smart storage so that homes can use more of the energy they produce.

  • Photovoltaic solar panels: Solar PV panels convert daylight into electricity for use in the home. They can reduce electricity bills, support low-carbon living and work well alongside batteries and heat pumps.
  • Air source heat pumps: These systems draw heat from outside air and use electricity to provide space heating and hot water. They are much more efficient than traditional fossil-fuel boilers, especially in well-insulated homes.
  • Home batteries: Battery storage allows households to store surplus solar electricity or cheaper off-peak grid electricity for later use. This can increase self-consumption, reduce peak-time electricity costs and provide greater flexibility.
  • Zero emission boilers: These are heating systems designed to provide heat without direct carbon emissions at the point of use, typically using electricity or other clean energy sources. They can be an option where a heat pump is not suitable, although performance and running costs depend on the property and energy tariff.

Together, these technologies can form a practical pathway towards cleaner, lower-
carbon homes, particularly when combined with good insulation and smart controls.
